The DreamPSU is a simple and fast to install replacement power supply for the SEGA Dreamcast that not only reduces heat, but also frees up some much needed internal space for any other mods you may have or want to install.
Last year I noticed my Dreamcast™ getting unusually hot around the power supply, Not long after, I got myself a GDEMU (not required for the DreamPSU, but awesome anyway), and the heat further increased, after doing some research I realized the culprit was the 12v line on the power supply, when it isn't used it actually reaches 14v and produces a lot of heat, not wanting to modify the existing power supply for when I wanted to use my GDRom disc drive, I thought, OK, I'll make myself a new power supply.
I recently spoke to a friend of mine and he explained how the Dreamcast™ power supplies will eventually die and people will have to cannibalize other consoles for parts. So I told him about my power supply and he convinced me there might be a market for it and that I should see if people would be interested, So I posted on the Dreamcast-Talk forums and Facebook and indeed it seems like people are.
- Small Size, only 48mm x 43mm (1.89in x 1.70in).
- Drop in, easy to use replacement for original power supply (no modifications necessary).
- Utilizes your original Dreamcast™ power button.
- Runs from an external 12v 2.5amp power supply (not included).
- Less heat inside your Dreamcast™ means that will potentially last longer.
- More space inside your Dreamcast™ for other mods.
- Spare 12v and 5v power header available for mods.
What Regions & Versions is it compatible with? The DreamPSU is compatible with all regions and all versions of the Dreamcast.
How is it powered? The DreamPSU is powered by an external "wall wart" power brick via a DC Barrel Jack similar to what you would find on a Slim PS2, Router etc.
Is a power brick included?NO, a power brick is not included, we looked into making one available with the perks, but the shipping cost would almost triple, 12v power bricks are readily available on Amazon, eBay and other online stores.
What specification power brick do I need? There is no solid answer to this. It all depends on what you're using with your Dreamcast, for instance if have an internal hard drive installed, you will need a higher rated supply. But if you use a standard Dreamcast without mods installed, a 12v 2amp power supply should be plenty.
Minimum: 12v 2amp.
Recommended: 12v 3amp or more.
What size DC jack do I need? The DreamPSU will need a power supply with a 2.5mm inner diameter and 5.5mm outer diameter jack. If you do not have or cannot find a 2.5mm power supply, i recommend you buy a 2.1mm to 2.5mm adapter. We was going to offer an option for the adapter, but Indiegogo doesn't allow "add-on" perks.
What polarity power supply do I need?Center positive. See the symbol below for reference.
Any recommended power supplies? As long as they meet the above requirements, most should work as fine. Personally, I use this 12v 3amp power supply.
What is the difference between DreamPSU and PicoPSU?The DreamPSU is REALLY easy to install and has easily accessible pins for 12v and 5v along with a nice power jack that slots into the rear of the console without any modifications.
Can I plug the DreamPSU into 110v / 240v wall socket?NO! You will kill the DreamPSU and possibly the Dreamcast™.
Why crowd-fund?In order for DreamPSU production to be viable, I am funding production via crowd-funding (you generous people). I'm not exactly rolling in money and cannot afford the upfront costs. The $5500 will cover the cost of manufacturing, packing and delivering the DreamPSU's along with other expenses (see below).
How will the DreamPSU be shipped? The DreamPSU will be put in an anti-static bag and a box with foam inserts for protection (the postal system can be brutal).
Will delivery be tracked? In the UK, the DreamPSU will be sent 1st class recorded. Worldwide, there will be 2 different shipping options, tracked and non tracked. The price of which the Post Office charges for tracked worldwide is almost double the price of non tracked. So i'm giving you the option.
Which is better, tracked or non-tracked?Tracked, if you wish for peace of mind. If a tracked item is not delivered, you will be sent a replacement. If a DreamPSU without tracking fails to be delivered, no replacement will be sent, due to the inability to confirm the legitimacy of the claim.
Is there a warranty? The DreamPSU does not come with a warranty, every DreamPSU will be fully tested by me, prior to shipping. If the DreamPSU is confirmed to be working at the time of testing, it will be packaged and sent to the purchaser. If you are having issues with the DreamPSU you received, please contact me.
